One of our missions is to prepare students to live and work in the globally connected world. Our language teaching and learning philosophy is to provide students with an authentic language and cultural learning experience.
Chinese is a compulsory subject for all students at The College from Prep through to Year 8 and becomes an elective subject in Year’s 9-12.
Learning a second language is much more than learning simple greetings. We provide real life learning scenarios which enable students to build the capacity for intercultural understanding. Language learning benefits our young learners’ personal, cognitive, academic, social and cultural development. It ultimately allows them to appreciate the world from other perspectives.
The College is committed to providing students with a diverse language learning experience by building partnerships and working with schools in surrounding areas. The Lakes College recognises the importance of a language program and this is evident by offering Chinese, Japanese, French and Spanish alternatives to suit student interest.
Our mission for a future focused education and preparing students for living and working within a global economy is reflected in the opportunities provided for students to engage in learning and service with young people in other countries through our Student Exchange Program.
The Lakes College has established student exchange programs with I-Shou International School (ISIS) in Taiwan and Beijing Primary School in China and is committed to academic excellence, collaboration and dedication to fostering international mindedness within our students.
The success of this program marks a milestone in achievement for interaction and collaboration between our two countries and builds a solid foundation for continued growth and success in the future.
Each year, selected students in Year 6 travel to Beijing Primary school as part of the Friendship Schools program. Our students are immersed in the Chinese culture, attending school, visiting the sights of Beijing and experiencing its culinary delights.
