Secondary School

Our specialist Secondary years’ learning programs aim to engage each student in learning while challenging them to grow. Students have the opportunity to experience a wide range of subjects that will equip them with the knowledge needed to succeed in life beyond the classroom. To support our students, our vertical house based system of pastoral care focuses on mutual respect, whilst equipping students with the right life and inter-personal skills to enable them to grow as individuals within our Christian community.

Year 7 - 10

Our Year 7 - 10 curriculum is designed to encourage students to discover their personal interest and potential, before entering specialised courses in Senior School years.

All students study the Key Learning Areas of English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Art & Science of Learning, Health and Physical Education, Chinese (to Year 8) and Faith and Values Education. Students are also offered the opportunity to study exciting electives including Home Economics, Dance, Drama, Music, Visual Art, Media Arts, ICT, Business, Robotics, STEAM, Extension courses and Industrial Technology.

The emphasis is placed on maintaining a healthy balance and sense of challenge through a variety of learning experiences whilst establishing the foundations for good study habits.

Year 11 and 12

Students in Years 11 and 12 aim to achieve a Queensland Certificate of Education, Overall Position or Rank in order to either attain university entrance or vocational education competencies. Students in the Senior years at The Lakes College have the opportunity to experience a wide range of senior subjects that will equip them with the knowledge needed to succeed in life beyond the classroom. With an inbuilt study line, small classes and an extensive range of QCAA approved subjects offered, students are receiving the best educational start to life.

The focus in the senior years is on an academic program that will enable students to fulfil their career aspirations. We recognise that every student is different and therefore offer a range of pathways, to ensure that all students are able to pursue their chosen career. Our students are able to choose from an extensive range of exciting options which include – authority and authority registered subjects, TAFE certificates or diplomas, as well as a wide variety of certificate courses to give our students the broadest possible options for their post-schooling life. These pathways enable our students the option of either university entrance through OP and selection rank, TAFE admission, Defence Force entry, Apprenticeships or a successful transition into the world of work.

The change from OP to ATAR

The Queensland Government, working with the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA), has announced that new systems for assessment in Years 11 and 12 and tertiary entrance will be phased in, effective from Year 12, 2020. The new systems draw upon recommendations by the Review of Tertiary Entrance conducted by the Australian Council for Educational Research. What do the proposed changes mean for Queensland students?
