Primary Musical

Welcome to the Primary Musical Web page! This web page will be updated frequently to bring you all the latest news regarding our Primary Musical.

In 2017, The Lakes College Primary School are excited to present The Wonderful “Wizard of Oz!” All students in Years 4, 5 and 6 in 2017 are invited to be a part of the musical and we encourage as many students as possible to participate. The musical journey is an exciting one where many magical memories are made. Our performance dates are scheduled for Thursday 24, Friday 25 and Saturday 26 August 2017 in the College Hall.

In 2017, the Primary Musical will be directed by Mrs Deb Ellison. Mrs Ellison used to be a professional performer working all around the world before taking her love of all things theatrical into schools and becoming a teacher. She is looking forward to sharing the wonderful musical journey with the cast.

  • Weekly rehearsals will occur every Tuesday afternoon in the College Hall from 3:00pm to 5.00pm.

Holiday and weekend whole cast rehearsals:

  • Tuesday 11 April: 9:30am – 2:30pm
  • Wednesday 12 April: 9:30am – 2:30pm
  • Saturday 6 May: 9:30am – 2:30pm
  • Saturday 3 June: 9:30am – 2:30pm
  • Monday 3 July, Tues 4 July, Weds 5 July, Thursday 6 July 9:30am – 2:30pm
  • Saturday 5 August: 9:30am – 2:30pm

It is an expectation that cast members are available to attend all whole cast rehearsals as required.

Our rehearsals are now well under way with the much anticipated of our scripts last week! I am looking forward to developing our scenes each week. Please remember it is important that you attend every rehearsal so you don't miss out on any of our choreography or acting direction. We will be learning a new song or dance almost every week.

Here is all the information you will need for Production Week next week.

Please read through everything with your child so they know exactly where to go each night.

PERFORMANCE NIGHTS – Thursday 24 August, Friday 25 August, Saturday 26 August

Arrival times

  • Maia, Rowan, Lewis, Jayden, Molly – 5:00pm arrival time
  • All other cast members to arrive no later than 5:30pm
  • Back Stage crew to arrive no later than 6:00pm
  • Cast members - Musical t-shirts must be worn. We have many staff and supervisors who may not be familiar with who are cast members are. Their t-shirts will identify them as cast members and allow them into our changing areas.
  • Back stage crew - Musical t-shirt with dark long trousers, black socks and black trainers or black shoes. The idea is that we are like ninjas and nobody knows we are there.
  • Boys changing area = Mrs Finlay’s Year 6 classroom CIS1
  • Girls changing area = 2 x changing rooms next to the Hall
  • Hair, make up and face painting = Upstairs in the Secondary building (next to Mrs Finlay’s room)

NB: All cast need to arrive with their hair and make-up complete unless they are having their face painted (Maia, Rowan, Lewis, Jayden, Molly). These students still need to apply their own mascara at home. Please click here for the hair and make-up instructions.

What to wear to performances

Upon arrival

All cast members should go straight to their changing areas to place their belongings in the spot where they will be changing:

After cast members have left their belongings in the changing area, they should make their way upstairs to our make-up area to check they have enough make up on. Our make-up experts will help them apply any extra that is required and also help with any hair issues. If you know your child will require extra help with hair and make-up, it would greatly help us if you send them earlier than 5:30pm so we can sort them out in plenty time. Once your child has had their hair and make-up checked, they can head back to their changing area and check all their costumes are set in the correct order.

Back stage crew should go straight back stage and let Lochie our Stage Manager know you have arrived.

Unless you have volunteered to help change the cast for a particular evening could I please ask that we do not have any parents in our changing areas. We have designated staff and parents supervising the changing areas the entire evening.

Costume items to bring

Please click here for the attached costume list. Please read this carefully to ensure your child has everything they need. If items have not already been sent into school, they should be named and brought along to our dress rehearsal on Tuesday 22 August. After our dress rehearsal on Tuesday, all items must be left at school for our performance evenings except for black school shoes. The black school shoes will need to go home after our Tuesday dress rehearsal and then brought to the Thursday evening performance where they can then be left until after the final show. After the final performance on Saturday evening, cast members should take all of their own items home.

Approximate finishing time
We aim to be off the stage around 9:30pm and have your child ready to leave at 9:40pm. (This will be slightly later on Saturday night – approx. 9:55pm)

Please allow 10 minutes for your child to return all their costume items and collect all their belongings. A supervising teacher will wait with your child until they are collected. Please check your child has all their belongings with them before you head off. Deleted the line about revised times – too confusing.

Please label ALL clothes and shoes

Please label everything your child is wearing to arrive in, as well as any costume items they are bringing along, including shoes. This will greatly help us to return any lost property items to your child.

Basket/storage container

All cast members need to bring a small basket, storage container or box along to the dress rehearsal on Tuesday 22nd and again for each of our performance nights. This will be used to ensure your child's costume items are kept together as they are changing throughout the show.

Back Stage Etiquette

For many reasons including safety to your child we ask that you carefully read our back stage rules:

No cast members, parents or siblings are allowed back stage, or on the stage at any time unless they are called back stage by myself, our Stage Manager Lochie or our designated Runner Hannah Quick. Hannah has been working with the cast at rehearsals and knows exactly when to collect each group of students. No-one except the back stage crew should be around our back stage area at any time before the show, during the interval or after the show has finished, unless called there. We have many large, heavy scenery items as well as props to move around in a small space and we also need to know the whereabouts of our cast members at all times.

We have a duty of care to ensure everyone is safe and we appreciate your support in following our back stage etiquette.

Food and drink

ONLY water should be brought to drink on performance nights as we can’t have any coloured or sugary drinks anywhere near our costumes. Please ensure your child has eaten their evening meal before arrival. They may bring snacks to eat during our interval however, please be mindful once again of our costumes. Yoghurts, dips and cheesy nachos are our costumes worst nightmare! Please click here for some ideas of snacks that would be appropriate to take into our changing areas.

Final Tuesday rehearsal 22nd August

As it will be Production week, I am mindful of giving the cast as much down time as possible. I would therefore like to finish our final Tuesday rehearsal at 4:15pm on Tuesday 22 August instead of the usual 5:00pm. We should be finished on stage by 4:00pm which will allow the cast 15 minutes to change out of their costumes from our dress rehearsal and collect all their belongings. Please feel free to come along at 4:00pm in case we are finished early. You may also like to help your child return all their costume items and collect all their belongings.

As always please email me if you have any questions regarding the musical. It is a very exciting time for our cast and crew who have worked so hard all year. I know you are all going to be so proud of each and every one of them as they bring this production to The Lakes College stage! We really would like sell out performances so please try to sell as many tickets as possible.
